One motif = 4 1/2"/11.5 cm, before blocking.

SPECIAL TERM

Beg-Cl: beginning cluster— Yarn over, insert hook in indicated sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, [yarn over, insert hook in same sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

Cl: cluster—Yarn over, insert hook in indicated sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, [yarn over, insert hook in same sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.

 

FIRST MOTIF

Chain 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 2] 8 times; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc and 8 ch-2 sps.

Round 2: Slip st in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, Beg-Cl in same ch-2 sp, [ch 5, Cl in next ch-2 sp] 7 times, ch 5; join with slip st in top of beginning ch—8 clusters and 8 ch-5 sps.

Round 3: Slip in first ch-5 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 5, sc) in same ch-5 sp, (sc, ch 5, sc) in remaining 7 ch-5 sps; join with slip st in first sc—16 sc and 8 ch-5 sps.

Round 4: Slip st in first ch-5 sp, ch 6 (counts as first dc, ch 3 here and throughout), dc in same ch-5 sp (corner made), [ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch-5 sp (corner made)] 3 times, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—8 dc, 4 sc, 4 ch-5 sps, and 4 corner ch-3 sps. Fasten off.

 

NEXT MOTIF (make and join 28)

Chain 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.

Rounds 1–3:Work Rounds 1–3 of first motif.

Determine placement of motif. The motifs should be worked and joined into a rectangle, 2 motifs wide and 14 motifs long.

Round 4 (joining round): Work as for Round 4 of first motif, except, to join sides of neighboring motifs, work ch-3-join or ch-5-join instead of corner ch-3 or side ch-5, respectively, as follows:

ch-3-join: Ch 1, slip st in corresponding ch-3 corner sp of neighboring motif, ch 1.

ch-5-join: Ch 2, slip st in corresponding ch-5 side sp of neighboring motif, ch 2.

Continue making and joining motifs, as established, into a strip 2 motifs across and 14 motifs long.

 

FINISHING

Border

Join yarn with slip st in ch-3 sp of any corner of scarf, to work along short edge.

Round 1: Working along short edge, ch 6, (dc, ch 3, dc) in same ch-3 sp, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next 2 ch-5 sps, *dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, dc in next ch-3 sp, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next 2 ch-5 sps;  repeat from * to next corner ch-3 sp**, (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3, dc) in corner ch-3 sp, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next 2 ch-5 sps; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch.

Round 2: Slip st in first ch-3 sp, ch 6, dc in same ch-3 sp, (dc, ch 3, dc) in each ch-3 sp around; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch. Fasten off.

 Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.
